Competitive Analysis

During the research phase, I prioritized competitive analysis to explore what features other cryptocurrency platforms offer and identify key elements to incorporate into the CryptoSmarts design. My main focus was to examine common design patterns and functionality across three areas: interactive maps, digital asset profiles, and informational sections.

CoinGecko

Digital Asset Profile Pages: Extensive profiles on thousands of cryptocurrencies with detailed information

Educational Resources: CoinGecko provides a lot of educational tools, such as "How to Bitcoin" guide, market research reports, and daily newsletters.

EasyCrypto

User-Friendly Interface: Easy-to-navigate design that makes it approachable for both beginners and experienced users.

Interactive Map: Interactive map allows users to explore different markets and currencies visually,

LearnCrypto

Beginner-Friendly Content: Provides simple, accessible explanations for people new to crypto.

Comprehensive Knowledge Base: Features an extensive library of articles and guides from the basics of cryptocurrency, how to use it, and how to trade it, which lowers the barrier to entry for newcomers.

By analyzing these components from competitor platforms, I gained valuable insights that helped shape the structure and features of CryptoSmarts, ensuring the platform meets industry standards while offering an intuitive user experience.

Design

Sketch | Low & High Fidelity

For my role, I was responsible for designing the website’s Home page, About page, and the timeline feature. We were given with the required features for each page, and from there, I began sketching initial concepts for how the pages could be structured and presented. This process allowed me to explore various layouts and ideas before moving into the more detailed design phases.

Home Page

  • Welcome message

  • Donate button

  • What we do/key features

  • Crypto Timeline

  • User Testimonials

  • Partners & Collaborators

  • Latest news and updates

Since the homepage is the first thing users see when they land on the website, it was important to ensure that all the key information was presented and that the necessary call-to-action buttons were strategically placed. The list above outlines the essential elements that were included on the page.

About Page

  • Mission and vision

  • Our Story

  • The Team

  • The Approach

The next screen is the About Page, which is as critical as the home page because its where users go to learn more about the company, its mission, vision, and values. I focused on presenting all the essential information clearly and ensuring that users could quickly understand what the company stands for.

Additionally, I also sketched out the crypto timeline page which serves to educate users about the history of cryptocurrency and its evolution. The goal of this page was to highlight key milestones and important events in the development of crypto, making it both informative and engaging.

To explore different visual approaches, I created three sketches of various timeline layouts and presented them to the client. After reviewing the options, we decided to move forward with the second design, which best presented the information in a clear way.

What We Do Section: Highlights the platform’s key services, including digital asset profiles, global crypto regulations, and educational content.

This flow of the page ensures that users can quickly access the most important features and resources, fostering a smooth and informative user experience right from the start.

Our Approach: Explains the platform’s methodology for providing information to users of all levels.

Team Overview: Introduces team members and their position as well as expertise at CryptoSmarts.

Crypto Timeline

Interactive Timeline: Users can scroll through key milestones in the development of cryptocurrency, from the launch of Bitcoin to recent advancements in blockchain.

Resource Center

In addition to the main pages above, I also designed several other key screens, the Resource Center, which serves as an all-in-one hub for users to explore different crypto-related resources: educational blogs, a glossary, recent news, and other learning materials.

This section is designed to provide users with easy access to a bunch of information, helping them deepen their understanding of cryptocurrency and stay updated on the latest news.

The screens above are the Digital Asset Profile and the Country Profile pages that were designed by my two fellow designers.

Reflection

Challenges

One of the main challenges I faced during this project was balancing my personal design preferences with the client’s requirements. At times, I found myself leaning toward my own design ideas, believing they might be more effective, but I soon realized, when working with a client, I had to stay with what they want even if I don’t agree with it at times such as color choices or stylistic guidelines.

Additionally, since this project was on a tighter timeline, it limited our ability to conduct thorough user testing, as most of our focus was to deliver the design quickly, we didn’t have much opportunity to gather feedback or ensure that the design fully aligned with the target user’s needs.

Learnings

This project is my first time designing a web platform, collaborating with other designers, and working for a client. By working with other designers from diverse backgrounds, I learned how to effectively collaborate and leverage our different skill sets to create a cohesive project. And by working with a client, I have learned the importance of time management and truly understanding the client’s needs to find the best way to integrate them into the design. Lastly, this project deepened my knowledge of responsive web design, especially when incorporating various elements like the Home page, About page, and Crypto Timeline. Moving forward, I plan to apply these insights to future projects where user engagement is a central focus.

Let’s connect.
